Max Harper

November 25, 1935 — September 7, 2017

Mr. Harper's final place of rest is located at Garden of Remembrance II, D-5, Space 2. Mr. Max Harper age 81 of Jonesboro passed away Thursday, September 7, 2017 peacefully at home following an extended illness surrounded by his family. Born and raised in Habersham Mills, GA., he was the son of Alfred Frank Lewis and Roxy Mozelle (Hallford) Harper. Max was employed with the United States Post Office. An early retirement allowed him to pursue his true passion for community service, visiting the sick and homebound and serving his church. He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Jonesboro and was involved primarily with Macedonian Call of Georgia (www.macedoniancallga.net). Max was active with the Forest Park Kiwanis Club and was often found volunteering for many community fundraisers. He served as a Board Member for several years on the Henry county Tax Equalization Board. He also enjoyed working at the Georgia General Assembly when in session as a doorkeeper. His greatest joy was spending time with his God grandchildren, being involved in their activities, offering fishing tips, sharing life lessons and being their biggest fan. Max loved to fish and spent many days on the lake with his only brother. He was always willing to lend a hand, share a smile or be a friend. He leaves his loving wife of 63 years: Shirley (Loudermilk) Harper, his daughter and only child: Jan Harper Harmon and husband Craig of Between, GA., brother: Lewis (Merle) Harper of Demorest, GA., sister: Darrell Ledford of Gastonia, NC., extended family: Cindy (Bubba) Cathy of Jonesboro, 6 God Grandchildren: Mark Cathy, James Cathy, Rachel Cathy, Seth Cathy, Luke Cathy and Matthew Cathy, nieces, nephews and many close friends. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 14, 2017 in the Chapel of First Baptist Church of Jonesboro with Dr. James Merritt and Rev. Irvin Pearre officiating. Mr. Harper will lie in state from 10-11 a.m. at the church. Interment will follow at 4 p.m. at Yonah Memorial Gardens in Demorest, GA. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to A Better Way Ministries, 320 Dividend Dr. Peachtree City, GA 30269 or to Macedonian Call of Georgia, Attn: Jackie Brannen, 2712 Sandlewood Circle, Locust Grove, GA 30248.
